As a result of Adam's sin, Adam and Eve were separated from God (spiritual death) and from the garden. Being separated from the tree of life, they later died a physical death, as did their children, and as we all will. But the descendants of Adam did not bear the punishment of spiritual death (spiritual separation from God) because of Adam's sin. Adam's descendants were only punished for their own sins.
